Antique Primitive Utilitarian Chest

A truly wonderful piece of early utilitarian storage, this solid wood primitive chest has the kind of honest construction and beautifully worn surface that only comes with age. The contrasting natural wood and nearly black painted finish, simple wooden knobs, old hardware and wonderfully imperfect edges give it an especially graphic quality.

The chest features two drawers beneath a hinged upper compartment, offering both character and useful storage. Years of wear have left behind scratches, softened edges, exposed wood and variations in the original finish—all contributing to its remarkable aged patina.

We love this piece styled on a tabletop or old workbench as a small collector’s cabinet, filled with letters, photographs, artist supplies or treasured objects. It would also be beautiful in a library or study beneath equestrian artwork, or in an entry layered with an antique lamp, books and seasonal branches. Its strong black-and-natural palette makes it especially easy to mix with early American, primitive, English country and collected cottage interiors.

A substantial, soulful piece that feels as though it came straight from an old workshop or country house.

Solid wood construction.
Approximately 20” W × 13” H.
